The narthex of the great church at Hurezi houses a gallery of nearly thirty portraits — the Cantacuzinos, the Brâncoveni, and the Bessarabian princes from Laiotă and Neagoe right up to Șerban Cantacuzino — through which Constantin Brâncoveanu visually legitimised his dual dynastic lineage: his paternal Bessarabian and his maternal Cantacuzino-Byzantine lineages. The same Baroque-inspired historicism can be found in the votive paintings from Târgoviște, in the portraits from Mogoșoaia and in the prints of the period, marking the beginnings of the historicist mindset of modern Romanian civilisation.

Saint Maxim Brancovici (1461/1462–1516), a hierarch of Serbian origin from the family of Despot Ștefan Brancovici, served as Bishop of Râmnic and Metropolitan of Wallachia during the reigns of Radu the Great and Neagoe Basarab, playing a key role in the reorganisation of the Church of Ungrovlahia, in brokering peace between Radu the Great and Bogdan III of Moldavia (1507), and in numerous diplomatic missions. The article reconstructs his life, his spiritual struggles and his spiritual and cultural work on Romanian soil, drawing on chronicles, liturgical services, genealogies and Romanian and Serbian historiography, and advocates for his inclusion in the synaxarion of the Romanian Orthodox Church.

The Romanian Principalities upheld Orthodoxy and developed a policy of defending and spreading the Christian faith in the face of Ottoman domination, whilst maintaining their own organisation and erecting places of worship. Rulers such as Saint Stephen the Great, Neagoe Basarab and Saint Constantine Brâncoveanu founded churches and monasteries and supported the Orthodox patriarchates directly subject to the authority of the sultans.

This article presents the hermit traditions of the Cozia Mountains and the lives of the Holy Monks Daniil the Hermit and Misail the Nacealnic, who lived as ascetics in caves beneath the Cozia cliff in the 17th century. A disciple of Daniil, Misail founded the Hermitage of Daniil and Misail, and their relics were laid in the foundations of the church built by Bishop Varlaam of Râmnic in 1676.
