The role of the Orthodox and Greek Catholic Churches in shaping Romanian national identity can be traced from medieval documents, such as the papal bull of 1234 addressed to King Bela IV, right up to the Great National Assembly at Alba Iulia on 1 December 1918, where the bishops Miron Cristea and Iuliu Hossu presided over the act of union. For Romanians, throughout the ages, the Church has represented not only a place of worship, but also a bastion of ethnic resilience, an instrument of national emancipation and a unifying force for the community in the face of external political and religious pressures.

The study analyses The Book, or Light, with Clear Proofs from the Dogmas of the Eastern Church Concerning the Schism of the Papists, printed by Saint Antim of Ivirean at Snagov Monastery in 1699, a translation of the work by the hieromonk Maxim of the Peloponnese, produced against the backdrop of the spread of Catholic propaganda in Transylvania. The anti-Roman arguments concerning papal primacy, the procession of the Holy Spirit, unleavened bread and purgatory are presented, emphasising the polemical and catechetical value of the printed work, which remains, to this day, untransliterated into modern Romanian.

Theatrum No. II (II) / 2016 Antim — A play in four acts Rev. Prof. Dr. Codruț-Dumitru Scurtu

This four-act play recounts the life and martyrdom of Saint Antim of Ivire, Metropolitan of Wallachia, tracking his journey from his ransom from slavery by Lady Marica Brâncoveanu in 1674 on the Bosphorus to his exile and martyrdom in 1716, ordered by Nicolae Mavrocordat. The reader learns about Antim’s work in printing and liturgy, his relations with Patriarch Dositei of Jerusalem, the Brâncoveanu family and Metropolitan Mitrofan, as well as his canonisation in 1992.
