The election of Bishop Sofronie Vulpescu to the see of the Diocese of Râmnic (1913–1918)
Rev. Dr. Laurențiu Rădoi Bishop Sofronie Vulpescu of Râmnic, the only Romanian hierarch imprisoned by German authorities during the First World War, is the subject of this study, which reconstructs his life and ecclesiastical career from his birth in 1856 in Lupșanu to his enthronement as Bishop of Râmnic-Noul Severin in 1913, drawing on speeches, reports, and contemporary accounts, including critical remarks by Nicolae Iorga and Tudor Arghezi.
