Damaschin Dascălul, Bishop of Buzău (1702) and subsequently of Râmnic (1708), was one of the great scholars of the Brâncoveanu era, dedicated to the translation and printing of liturgical books in Romanian. This article examines his education, his printing activities in Buzău and Râmnic, and the canonical and cultural resistance he offered to the Austrian occupation of Oltenia (1716–1739), when his Romanian publications, such as the Ceaslovul (1724) and the Învățătura pentru șapte Taine (1724), circulated clandestinely in Transylvania to support the Orthodox Christians there.
