The presence of Romanian Orthodox priests on the front lines of the First World War – from the mobilisation of over 250 clergymen in August 1916 under the coordination of Archpriest Constantin Nazarie to acts of heroism such as that of Father Justin Șerbănescu at Azuga – illustrates a tradition of military chaplaincy with roots dating back to the era of Prince Barbu Știrbei and which has continued, following a communist hiatus, since 1994.
