A year dedicated to a saint of the cultural stature of Saint Antim Ivireanul, Hierarch and Martyr, has given rise to a series of wide-ranging studies. There is no risk of the subject being exhausted as a topic for analysis. We owe him a moral debt, and we cannot be indifferent to the direction in which our theological understanding of his deeds will develop.

The article traces the life of Antim Ivireanul from his release from slavery by Patriarch Dositei Notara, through his time as abbot at Cetățuia Iașilor and his apprenticeship in printing alongside Bishop Mitrofan, right up to his episcopate in Râmnic (1705–1708), where, through the printing of the 1706 Evhologhion — which contained the first complete Romanian-language Liturgy — he established the Romanian language as the irreversible foundation of the Orthodox church service.
