‘Learning to unlearn’: The foundations of Christian Orthodox education
The Most Reverend Archbishop Maximos Constas A lecture delivered at the 2024 Conference on Christian Education, the text explores the nature of authentic Christian teaching and the patristic distinction between natural and spiritual knowledge, drawing on the works of Saint Basil the Great, Saint Maximus the Confessor and Saint Gregory Palamas. The Christian educator is called to live out what they teach, to practise unlearning the passions, and to receive spiritual knowledge as a gift of Grace, not as the result of intellectual study.
